Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I recently returned to teaching second grade in an urban school.
Despite many challenges, my students come to school each day eager to learn how to learn and drive their own learning.
My students love school because they experience thrilling and motivating educational experiences that simultaneously improve their math, writing, reading, science, and social skills.
This often takes monetary funding I do not have. Unforgettable learning experiences in second grade help my students retain learning in their long-term memories.
My Project
Cooperative play is one of the best ways to help students build positive relationships with one another. When they cooperate and have fun outside the classroom, they have more positive learning experiences together inside the classroom.
This year's students haven't had peer interactions for a year and a half, and they would benefit greatly from playing together.
The cones would offer structure to favorite Kagan Cooperative Learning Silly Sports and Goofy Games activities. I think they would even provide enough structure, the second graders could run games for other students at recess!
In addition to flailing social skills, this year's class is also far behind in their reading skills. The more text we can read together and send home to be read repeatedly, the better readers they will become. Scholastic News is perfect for that because it teaches informational text the kids find exciting! And, it is a newspaper format the students can write on and take home.
