My Students
My students are hard-working 5th graders who love to learn. They are motivated, talented, and unique. They are also compassionate, kind, and helpful. Students in my class often have opportunities to teach each other, and it is not unusual for me to learn a thing or two from them as well! They attend a great school where the parents are involved and supportive and the entire staff works together to make sure that each student receives a terrific education.
Teamwork and collaboration are emphasized in the culture of the school.
Teachers at our school structure lessons which provide students many opportunities to work together in groups. The goal is that by working collaboratively, the kids will be able to help one another achieve at a higher level than would be possible on their own.
My Project
For the past few years, I have required that my students create and present PowerPoint presentations in class. Traditionally, this is done at least a few times during the school year. It gives the students a chance to research a topic they are studying (often related to something in our Science curriculum), become an expert on it, and then teach their classmates. In the process, students learn valuable presentation skills as well. Above all, they get a chance to help each other learn. They know that the harder they work on their project, the better it is for all the students in the class. However, not all the computers in our classroom have the required software. The Microsoft Office software will make our classroom far more productive by enabling more students to work on their PowerPoint presentations at one time.
