Mrs. R. from Akron OH is requesting art supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students these at-home STEAM materials to help foster their creativity, ingenuity, experimentation, problem-solving and collaboration skills needed to be successful!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are hungry, not only for the food in the cafeteria, but also for becoming productive citizens of the world. As an IB school, our focus is to develop internationally minded students which encourages them to become responsible members of the community.
My students are typical children in an urban setting.
Many come to school hungry, tired, homeless, and often times scared. With all this baggage, my students still have a passion for learning. Because of the diverse needs of our students, the teachers and all staff members provide a safe, nurturing, and loving environment where students feel a sense of community. Our school focuses on attributes that promote students to be inquirers, communicators, open-minded risk-takers, and thinkers who use critical and creative thinking skills to take on complex problems.
Teaching relevant, in-demand skills that will prepare students to become innovators in an ever-evolving world is always at the forefront of my teaching. STEAM related learning sparks an interest and lifelong love for the arts and sciences in children from an early age. All of my students LONG to be little engineers, scientists, artists, or innovators which challenges and encourages their natural sense of curiosity. In addition, STEAM education helps to bridge the ethnic and gender gaps sometimes found in math and science fields.
Kids should "Engineer" before they can spell it!
Imagine trying to teach and learn STEAM based skills while learning remotely. While distance learning is by no means an ideal situation for hands-on learning, I have put together some strategies that continues to promote STEAM skills while learning remotely.
STEAM bags will be sent home to my students so they can continue to learn the necessary skills that STEAM education has to offer. Certain home challenges will be:
1. Build a bridge that holds weight
2. Build a tower taller than you
3. Build a tower to hold a stuffed animal
4. Build a zip line
5. Build a chain reaction
The materials I am requesting such as cardstock, popsicle sticks, clothepins, yarn, playdoh, plastic cups, paper plates, pipe cleaners and aluminum foil will support these at home STEAM challenges. Before I send home these STEAM bags, I intend to read "Boy and Bot" and "Clink" to the students to inspire them to persevere through their work at home.
These STEAM bags are also an opportunity for the students and their families to work and problem solve together. My students have already showed a huge interest in STEAM activities and this will just continue to enrich their experiences at home!
