Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our running club has quickly become an after school activity our students look forward to joining each year. Over the past four years, the students who have participated in the after school running club have shown development in a growth mindset in both their academic and personal lives. From camaraderie to athletics to trying something new, boys and girls in fourth and fifth grade are not just learning about a healthier lifestyle and building endurance. They are meeting goals they never imagined. Self-reflection from the students indicates that they believe running has helped them achieve their goals.
Students self-select to join the running club, and no one feels limited to join based on athleticism.
As a school, we are identified as a low socioeconomic, bilingual campus with more than 80% of students on free breakfast and lunch. Our families do not have the financial resources to register their children for races.
My Project
Kids Run This School meets once a week with the intention of not only building endurance to run a 5K, but to also build a growth mindset about perseverance, achieving goals, and healthy choices. Before we run, we read stories to discover how others have persevered and relate this to our own goals. Each week we celebrate a student's accomplishments of encouraging others, perseverance, and dedication with a "Runner of the Week" band award.
At the end of our season, we would like to celebrate our accomplishments with a color run on our campus.
A highlight for the students is when their families and staff come out to cheer them on and shower them with color using the requested color powder. In addition to the bands for student recognition and the color powder and sunglasses for our color run, we need water bottles and snacks for our weekly runs.
