Welcome to the beautiful Sandhills of Nebraska. My 5th grade English Language Arts classroom is filled with students from a variety of economic and cultural backgrounds. You will find hard-working ranch kids, tech-savvy smarties, sports nuts, and dance divas just to name a few. These kiddos are hardworking and some of the kindest kids you will find.
On any typical day, you will see students collaborating together to work on novel studies or English standards to achieve NE State standards.
We love to read and getting lost in a book is the best way to learn...we feel! I am also responsible for teaching art to the entire 5th grade (on a rotating basis).
My Project
In my classroom students often work together on reading or writing projects. I also teach art to all 5th graders. Currently, the students have desks that we push together into small groups to make this easier. The downfalls to this are: the kids unintentionally move the desks; shared art materials wobble due to uneven cracks; and sweeping under 32 chair/table legs gets to be cumbersome. Another downfall is that we have a student in a wheelchair, and his chair doesn't fit under our current desks. Replacing the desk with tables will allow him to join his peers during art work.
By replacing the individual desks with tables, the students will have more work space that doesn't need pushed back into place.
Art materials can be located centrally on the table, so that all students can reach them. Students with disabilities, that prevent them from using a regular classroom chair, can join in on the learning. The custodial staff will also be happier as sweeping will be lessened.
