Help me give my students the gift of quality literature starring black boys and girls written by black men and women. People of color are under-represented in our reading curriculum.
The students that will benefit from this project are 12 5th graders, mostly girls and mostly students of color, from Minneapolis MN. I am asking for 15 books in case other fifth graders ask to participate. These students have asked me to be in my other book clubs, but I told them no, that I wanted to keep those clubs small to preserve the intimacy of the groups. Thirteen students asked me if I would start a group for them because they enjoy reading so much. These students are taught with a reading curriculum that features mostly white characters.
I want these students to read books about kids like themselves and so I am starting one more book club for them.
I am enjoying the other two groups so much that I wanted to start a third, especially since these persistent students must really love reading. We will meet once a month over lunch to discuss the books. I wanted to make this book club feel special so I thought I would have them read all different books. My last project for my Boys of Color Book Club was so successful that I wanted to replicate it.
My Project
This project is a replica of my two other book clubs, except that this one will meet once a month. I believe that when children read about characters like them, they enjoy reading more and are more likely to read more. These are students who love reading so much, they have asked me to start this club.
These books will help students enjoy reading and school more.
I hope that these books have characters that they can connect to that will lead to rich discussions. All of these books are written by award-winning writers. These students deserve to have access to quality literature.
