My students are an incredibly sweet, inquisitive group, always excited to learn new things. They ask a lot of questions when there is an opportunity to explore.
Our class mission statement is, "We will work together to have fun and be our best; we can make our dreams come true!" We wrote it together and repeat it every day.
They are great at supporting and encouraging each other.
Our school is a Title 1 school where over half receive free or reduced lunches. We are in a rural area, but my students all live in town. I have several ESL students. Their academic abilities range from considerably below grade level to well above grade level.
My Project
Most of my students have never played many of the games that generations of us grew up with. The digital tools that are available right now can be fabulous, but kids still need "old school" games too.
Monopoly, Life, Sorry, Yahtzee and other classic games help students build their number sense that is the foundation to all mathematical understanding while they roll and count and make financial decisions.
Battleship, Guess Who, and Hedbanz build critical thinking and strategy skills. They also help children with basic social skills like taking turns and sportsmanship. Last but not least, are the engaging reading and math facts practice.
I want to bring these opportunities to my students with tried and true, unplugged games. They will be having so much fun during inside recess and Fun Fridays, that they won't even realize they are learning!
