Because this is a charter school, the students and their parents have made the decision to attend. They might be forgoing their neighborhood school and traveling long distances to attend our school.
My students are a very diverse mix!
I teach a 1st and 2nd grade combo class math and science. This is a charter school, and we emphasize creativity and Eco-wellness. Students and their parents can choose to attend this school in lieu of their local neighborhood public school. Because it's a sort of start-up school, we don't have the funds of a large school district. Most of our furniture is secondhand stuff from other schools or things found in thrift stores or donated. We are providing a private school education to students free of charge.
My Project
My students need a classroom easel, chart paper, and dry erase markers to become successful mathematicians and scientists. This is a very standard piece of equipment for a primary classroom. It's easy for kids to sit on the rug and learn from this easel while I present a lesson to them, and they can use it on their own during stations and centers. It is also, unfortunately, a very expensive and nice piece of equipment, so you don't find them very often used.
Every primary classroom should have one!
It makes presenting lessons easy, and the extra supplies will keep us going. Many of these children and their parents choose to forgo their traditional public schools for our charter school, and the students deserve to have nice furniture and learning tools.
