My students need materials for open-ended exploring and building. In our fast-paced and jammed packed days, we need to remember that kids need time to be kids. They need time to be creative!
Our first-grade classroom is made up of sixteen diverse children. They are diverse in their interests, learning styles, culture, socio-economic status, and abilities! Although we are a diverse group, in our classroom we are all on the same team! I strive to make my classroom a safe place for students to be themselves. I want my students to be excited about school each and every day! As their teacher, it's my job to create an environment which promotes learning!

My Project
Our days are filled with reading, writing, and math. Children learn and grow an unbelievable amount in first grade. I have made it a priority this year to allow more time for community building through play and exploration. I also provided some opportunities for open-ended building. A chance to be creative and create unique pieces. What I found was that this type of task was very difficult for many.
I want to provide my students with a variety of materials to use to extend their thinking and creativity.
These materials will be used as a way to ease into our school day in morning bins as well as be available during choice time or indoor recess.
Kids need time to be kids and time to do what they do best-play! In our fast-paced world and high standards for students we need to remember that we are educating the whole child: socially, emotionally, and academically!
