Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In addition to teaching 6th grade, I have the amazing privilege of facilitating a student-led technology team of 6th and 7th graders, called the "Genius Squad." They work with both teachers and students in our PreK-8 school to assist in our 1:1 iPad implementation. They have led workshops to teach our teachers about different apps for learning, facilitated coding clubs for the younger students, worked one-on-one with our littlest learners to use technology to publish books, and so much more!
Our Genius Squad members are an inspiring, ambitious, and devoted group of students who have been essential to the success of our efforts to implement technology for learning.
They are working with students at all levels of our school to teach them coding, creativity and collaboration with the iPads. A favorite activity at all ages is learning to code - especially with robots! We are working on acquiring small sets of robots so that the Genius Squad can lead coding lessons to students in grades PreK through 8. I'm honored to be a part of this team and believe this opportunity is truly preparing our students for a great future!
My Project
These two robots (the Meebot and the Ozobot) will be used by our Genius Squad (our student technology team) to teach other students about coding. These 6th and 7th grade students will visit other classrooms in our school, from kindergarten though middle school, to lead activities that teach coding with robots.
Coding teaches problem-solving, creativity, logic, and collaboration skills.
The great thing about coding is that students can begin to learn it at even very young ages and it is incredibly engaging. Not only that, but the students on the technology team are developing clear communication skills and leadership skills by having the opportunity to teach others.
There are many apps and programs that we have been using to teach coding, but using robots to teach coding makes the learning come alive. Students write code and see the results of their efforts in real-time. It provides an opportunity for them to be flexible and creative, problem-solving on the fly. Plus, it's a ton of fun!
