Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have diverse special needs. They are classified as "cognitive moderate/self-contained." They are a happy group of students and are eager to learn. They love learning through hands-on materials and technology. They seem to be reached better though visual/hands-on technology. We are a Title I school district and serve a low income population of students.
My students have challenges with communication and use technology to help them learn how to say or spell words.
Some students use communication boards and the iPads have many great communication apps that are available for student use. My students are generally very happy, appreciative, and eager to learn. Despite their many challenges, they are always willing to try a new skill and learn new concepts.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting are going to help my students with social skills, sharing, turn-taking, communication, and academic skills. My students struggle with writing, reading, and communication so games (interactive and group) help them to stay engaged and learn. These games will greatly enhance their ability to identify letters/sounds, numbers, and every day positional words that they need in their world around them. We try to have "game day" once a week in our life skills class. These games will give my students the skills they need to learn and communicate with their peers. Sadly, the school budget gets cut further and further each year. Since my students are special needs, they learn differently than most students. Writing and reading tasks are very hard for them, so playing academic games helps them to connect to the learning. These games that I am requesting for our class will help with letter identification, number identification, learning positional words (in, out, up, down), and they will also be strengthening their OT (occupational therapy) skills by manipulating the game pieces and game boards.
