I teach 8th grade ELA classes to a range of students. That is probably the best part about my job - figuring out how to get to each kid, regardless of their specific backgrounds, shortcomings, or circumstances.
I feel blessed to have the responsibility of teaching such an incredibly diverse group of students.
As a teacher, I do my very best every day to keep my curriculum relevant, interesting, and challenging. Professional development is the best way for me to continue to hone my craft as a teacher and continue on my quest for a highly engaging classroom.
My Project
We all see the headlines, and we know that things need to change in schools. One change I would like to facilitate is empowering students to resolve conflicts on their own and to use these conflicts as an opportunity to learn and grow. I am asking for several different books to help me train students and start a peer mediation program at my school.
Students need training in specific conflict resolution strategies.
Students should be able to recognize a conflict and implement the necessary steps to de-escalate them without adult intervention. This is a life skill that many students are lacking. Hopefully, through peer mediation training, our students will be able to resolve not only their own conflicts, but also facilitate resolution for their peers. As the Student Council Adviser, I want to train Council members to be peer mediators in order to resolve conflicts before they require teacher-intervention.
