This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school serves a low-income, urban school community in Baltimore City. I have an amazing group of students and a dedicated staff that strives to achieve very high academic goals. Our school works hard in developing strong math, reading and writing skills.
In the art room, I strive to create integrated lessons that pull in knowledge from core academic classes.
In keeping with the high standards for our students, I work to have ongoing development of our arts program. The arts help children achieve academically in many ways by teaching planning and preparation, following directions, thinking outside the box, and developing creativity and executing skills.
My Project
Last year, we started a raised bed garden at our school with the help of Captain Planet and some local businesses. We had a wonderful time watching and documenting our plants growing, but weather and lack of ideal places to start our seeds limited our project.
With this greenhouse and supplies, students can plant and document the growth of the seeds.
Students will keep drawing journals of the seeds' growth and conduct several science experiments about the conditions in which the seeds are grown. By creating a centralized place to grow our seeds, they will be safe and each class will be able to see what the others are growing. Gardening is not only a great educational experience, but also a therapeutic and calming activity for our students. It helps them understand where their food comes from and builds connections to the earth.
