Kids Experiencing Music in an Exciting Way with Wii Music!

Welcome to the exciting world of my music class, where every child experiences music in the way it was intended, and leaves with a joy of music to last a lifetime! I am an elementary music teacher in a small city in Michigan. I teach in two buildings and see about 600 students a week from kindergarten to grade five. Both of the buildings where I teach are Title I buildings, meaning the state provides extra funds to the schools based on the economic needs of the student population. Our students’ economic level is considered to be “moderate poverty.”

As a music teacher, I consider my most important job as giving students an opportunity to experience many facets of music. The more varied experiences a student receives increases the likelihood that student will continue a love and appreciation for music throughout their lives. In my class, students experiences music visually, aurally, kinetically and aesthetically. We never have a “sit down and open your books to page 37” music class! With this philosophy, I am always looking for the most exciting ways to present elements of music to my students. Technology plays a big role in giving students a unique experience, especially since it is particularly relevant to our society. Students in my school do not typically have access to Internet at home, or have any video gaming systems, so I make it a personal job to expose my students to as many music-based technologies available.

Recently, Nintendo has designed a wonderful interactive music-centered game called Wii Music. In Wii Music, the player is able to choose authentic looking and sounding instruments (instruments that are characteristic of many genres of music) to physically “play” with the Wiimote. This is a great and unique way to introduce students not only to the different instruments in our world, but also learn how to interact with and manipulate them to perform the music within the game. Not only is this really fun, but it becomes a personal experience when the player can create their own character to play the instruments. The great part about the performance is that up to four players can choose different instruments and play together! Students also have the opportunity to be the conductor, play a bell in a virtual bell choir, or play listening games designed to strengthen aural skills. In order for students to be able to have this experience, I am looking to get a Nintendo Wii and Wii Music. Down the line I would like to add more Wiimotes and Wii Nunchucks to allow more students to play together. Having this game as part of our music classroom will enhance students’ experiences with music.

Since each student learns in a unique way, having the opportunity to interact with music in this manner will draw more students into a love for music! With your help, you will be bringing a very special learning tool to 600 students, many of whom will not get this opportunity otherwise. You will be helping lead these students through a more technological-centered society by giving them a fun and exciting way to experience music through a modern interactive gaming system. You will also help these students to continue to find ways of personally expressing themselves through music in a safe and fun environment.
