Kids Can Sew, Sculpt, and Fabricate at DWES Art Studio!
Help me give my students sewing supplies and a thread organizing rack for the fiber center and craft sticks and other materials for the sculpture center. They love and need the hands-on experience of sewing, attaching, and fabricating!
My students are artists from Preschool through 6th grade who come to my classroom for art class each week. The art room sees a lot of diversity of ideas and ages every day. All of my students are seeking new ways of expressing themselves with art materials and looking to develop the skill levels necessary to make their artistic vision come to life.
All students in the art room have the opportunity to pursue their own line of creative inquiry and practice and to do so individually or collaboratively.
Our school values personalized learning and collaboration; students' experiences in the art room strengthen their creative and collaborative skills and generate more excitement for learning. Artists in upper elementary at my school are often so jazzed about what they are creating that they choose to spend extra time in art class brainstorming new ideas or keeping the momentum going on completion of art projects.
I am consistently joyfully surprised at the creativity and intrinsic motivation demonstrated by all of my students-they can't wait to find ways to make what they see, feel, or imagine happen with paint, paper, clay, and other media.
My Project
Our art studio is a place of unfettered creativity. With over 600 students using the studio weekly, we need a lot of supplies to support their learning. I just opened the sculpture center to students K-6 and challenged them to learn new ways of attaching materials together as they create sculptures from craft supplies and recycled cardboard and plastic items. Next, I will be opening the fiber center, where students will learn basic sewing and embroidery techniques, along with weaving and needle felting.
As students acquire new skills and familiarity with a wide range of materials, their creativity and problem-solving as artists expand, and they are more able to express the artworks they envision.
Also, with these materials, students will have more opportunity to practice the fine motor skills so essential to be effective and well-rounded in every area of life. I am excited to see the embroidered pillows, sewn bags, and felted designs they come up with and how access to fabric, yarn, and fibers influences their choices as sculptors!
