My students need different sizes of xylophones and glockenspiels. We have been exploring how to create music using letter notation with matching letters taped onto small xylophones.
My classroom is a non-traditional music class. The majority of our students have very limited speech. Music is an interactive and sensory experience.
My students are all Special needs and Multi-handicapped.
Music is one of their favorite subjects and one that they can succeed in. Each song activity is adapted to each child with a focus on participation; either with scarves flying in the air, beach balls bouncing to the beat or fish flying as they help shake a parachute to the music. Our school includes Life Skills Support, Multiple Disability Support, Autistic Support, Emotional Support, Behavioral Intervention, Preschool and Hearing Impaired.
My Project
Our students are using their basic reading skills of the alphabet in music class. We have several toy xylophones with the letters magnified and taped on. We practice playing songs after we read the letter notation on the board.
We want to include everyone at the same time as we play.
We are adding higher and lower sounds to the toy xylophones as well as buying "real" xylophones. We watch percussion videos with children playing, and our students want to do that too!
I know that they are able to do this. They have a burning desire to be like the other children.
