Imagine sitting in a room full of colleagues listening to a lesson that is overwhelming and confusing; and then realizing that you are the only one who feels that way. When the lesson is over you approach the teacher to clarify it and they don't have the resources to do so. I am a first grade teacher who is all too aware that it happens everyday in my classroom. Working in a high needs community means that I will have students coming to me that have many different learning levels. I have students who have no parental support or resources and come to me to learn for the first time and students who have parental support to achieve at the expected level of a first grader. I have been working at my school for two years now and have experienced the woes of a smaller budget each year, which in turn creates a larger gap between the students in my school and the students in the surrounding suburban schools.
In order to close these gaps, my students need as much small group and one-on-one attention I can give them. With these varying learning levels it is impossible for me to reach all the students in a whole group setting. Research shows that small group learning allows the teacher to meet the students on their level and get them to where they need to be by the end of the shool year. In order to get the small group time they need there has to be a place in the room away from all distractions where they can learn their individual lessons.
This is where the Kidney Bean table comes in. Right now when I meet with my students it's in the center of the room at a "table group" (5 desks pushed together). When sitting at a table group the students are distracted with the materials in the desk as well as the students doing work around them. I also face the challenge of them drifting off because I'm usually sitting on the end and the challenge of looking over their neighbor to see me gets old. With a Kidney Bean table I can place it in the corner of the room away from the distractions of others. I will have their full attention for the lesson because they will all have to face me. These small group lessons will allow me to take the reading, math, social studies, or science concepts to be taught and present them on the level of the group in front of me. This will ensure their success and erase their frustrations.
Your help will ensure that my students will be given the chance to preform at the level of most first graders and feel success for maybe the first time in their lives.
