This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a Title I school with 100% free breakfast and lunch. We are a newly combined school with 1,100 students. The majority of my students come from neighborhoods that are struck with high poverty. Some of my students are English language learners and some are special education. My students really learn to love school and learning! But many come with challenges. They are below grade level as early as kindergarten. We have a tough job when we have to teach students their names when they don't even know their alphabets, but we overcome those obstacles with a lot of love, discipline, and hard work.
My Project
Many students benefit from snacks provided by me on a daily basis. Many students are rushed in the morning, arriving to school late and with no breakfast. They depend on me or their counselor to provide a small snack to get them through the day. Some students cannot wait for lunch and complain of being hungry or having a stomachache. For one reason or another, some students do not have access to food.
My students know that they can count on me for a snack until their next snack or meal.
Often, students' main source of food comes from school, so having extra snacks gives students the security of knowing there are extra snacks to keep them nourished.
