Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of teaching a dynamic, energetic, hilarious group of four to five year olds that make me smile on a daily basis. They are from an ethnically diverse background with a high ELL population, many of whom speak little to no English upon entering the classroom. Because of this, our class has a special emphasis on language development.
I strive to create a classroom community whereby working together, every child has the opportunity to discover the joys of learning and achieving.
My Project
Picture this: A family sits around the kitchen table working on making patterns with colorful manipulative tiles. Younger siblings watch as their older sibling demonstrates an A B pattern they learned to make in the classroom. Older siblings make helpful suggestions, and parents watch their student demonstrate the skills they are learning in school. Perhaps A whole family plays together, with letter recognition card games. Students feel successful, taking pride in their learning, and showing off their grade level knowledge. These literacy and math take home kits are a fun and engaging way for families to become involved with their students learning, and provide support at home.
They come with a variety of manipulatives that appeal to young sensory learners and activity cards that are simple enough that older siblings or non-english speaking parents can engage with their eager learners! Our students will use these materials to explore their ability through building, drawing, counting, making letters and sounds, and then words! From letter recognition and writing- to patterning and number correspondence, these kits align perfectly with the academic skills our students are learning! This will change our students' lives for the better. They will love school and feel success at an early age -- all while having fun!
