This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you know what it feels like to walk into the first day of school and not even have a pencil to write with? This can be embarrassing, but as a student I know the teacher always has supplies I can borrow or even have.
The school that I work in has a population of 98% African American and is 97% Free and Reduced lunch.
Many of the students that I teach live in families in which supplies for school is not a top priority and the teacher is responsible for basic supplies. The school gives us as many resources as they can, but we have a population of 800 and the supplies are slim.
My Project
I have requested art supplies like copy paper, crayons, markers, pencils and a pencil sharpener, tag and construction paper because the first week of school is about getting to know yourself and your classmates, the students will be doing a self-portrait. They will draw what they see, and then write about it. This discussion will then lead to how we are perceived and how it's important to not judge a book by its cover. I also requested post its, and highlighters because while reading it's important for the students to jot down their thoughts and opinions about what they are reading, or to be able to highlight information they think is important.
The reason that these supplies are important is because they will help to make every child start off on the same foot, knowing that they will have supplies to use.
I teach 75 students and wish I could provide for all of them, but I can't. I'm asking for your help!
