Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are struggling readers with many outside challenges. They come from families that want their children to succeed, but they have parents who often work multiple jobs, not leaving parents with much time to focus on their children's academics at home. Additionally, about 85% of students receive free or reduced rate lunch.
My students know they are struggling academically, but they are engaged and interested in learning.
They come to me multiple times a week for intensive, small group support in reading. The motto in my room is that your brain is a muscle that needs exercise and these students have really taken that to heart, putting in a lot of effort to become better readers.
My Project
Many of my students have trouble focusing and I want to provide them with seating choices. Some students like to work standing up, some like to move back and forth, and some kick their legs vigorously while working.
Bouncy bands have the dual purpose of helping students release energy and of protecting my shins from students' swinging legs!
These durable bands will be a great tool to increase student focus. Students using these bands remind me of ducks, their upper body is cool and calm, their eyes are focused on their task, but their feet are moving quickly below the surface.
