Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in a high poverty district, serving over 500 students in the art room K-8th grade, and for many this is their only exposure to the arts. It is a place where our many students who are learning to speak English, who have just moved to the city, state, or country can communicate freely.
The art room is a place where students can think outside the box, develop problem solving skills, and express themselves safely.
Help these enthusiastic readers flourish! Our students love to use their creative thinking skills and find inspiration through literature and illustrations.
My Project
The books and floor mats will provide a reading corner in the art room. In our small space there will be an easy to clean space in a high traffic area with books and other resources available for reading. Our budget is used up quickly providing basic art supplies for our over 500 students from low-income families, and books quickly become a luxury.
Books help students meet our district goal to read and comprehend increasingly complex text in all content areas, including art, and reach the national visual arts standard of analyzing and interpreting illustrations through visual thinking strategies and story telling.
The foam floor mats will be used to create a easy to clean and comfortable area for reading, writing, and reflection during their weekly art class. The books, A Line Can Be..., Press Here, and others will also be used to inspire character designs, story telling through artistic representations, and to start our own reference library; they provide inspiration and references for our young creative thinkers in the art room.
