I teach 20 second-grade students at Woodlake Elementary School in Mandeville, Louisiana. Many of my students were affected by Hurricane Katrina, whether in loss of power or loss of/damage to their homes. We were out of school for 5 weeks and have been playing "catch-up" ever since!
My students love to read and we spend a lot of time reading in our class. We start the day with a Reader's Workshop, where we learn and exercise great reading strategies as we practice independent reading. The children each have a “book nook,” which is a little space on our floor where they can read quietly to themselves or with a buddy. Some spots are carpeted, but most are just tile, which can be quite uncomfortable after a while. I have found the perfect solution to our problem…
The Kick Backer Activity Chair is exactly what my students need to enjoy a little comfort as they read. These sturdy plastic chairs are also foldable and stackable, so they won't take up much room when not in use. Ten of these chairs would allow my students to rotate through them every few days, giving everyone more than one chance each week to use them.
In addition to the chairs, I found some wonderful battery-operated reading lamps that the children can carry with them to their book nook. Talk about cozy!!! I would like to get ten of these lamps and the rechargeable batteries and chargers to keep them running for a long time.
My students would make use of the chairs and lamps every day during Readers' Workshop and during free reading time. Being able to kick back and read will allow my students the chance to practice those skills that will make them great readers!
As one of the after school teachers, my homework students will also have the opportunity to use the chairs and lamps, increasing the impact of your generous donations!
