Musical, creative, inquisitive, energetic...these are all words that describe my students. They love to sing, move, play instruments, and learn in hands-on ways. They love to use drums, Orff instruments, and ukuleles in our music room, and they love to perform.
Around 25% of our students come from military families, and this brings them their own unique set of challenges.
I want to teach them a love for music that will last them their whole lives, wherever they may find themselves.
My Project
"I wish I had never learned to play the piano." These are words I've never heard an adult say. However, I've had countless parents tell me that they wish they'd stuck with lessons or that they've always wanted to learn to play. Playing piano is a total brain workout! It involves all ten fingers, the senses of sight, hearing, touch, spatial awareness of the instrument, a sense of rhythm, and artistic interpretation. It activates the brain in a way that no other instrument does! I want my students to have the opportunity to learn at learn basic piano keyboarding skills and to advance as far as they are personally able. I fully believe it is a skill that will serve them well in life, promote brain development, and support their academics.
We have several students who have recently moved to our area from Puerto Rico, some as recently as last week.
They have experienced much change and trauma, and I fully believe that music can be a great comfort in times like this.
When participating in music, there is no English or Spanish---only the music!
These pianos are one piece of a piano lab setup that will allow me and my students the best of both worlds when it comes to piano instruction. We will be able to play as a class, but, with the communication system, I can also have each student practicing in an individual setting with their own headphones. Will you help our school reach our dream goal of a piano lab?
