My students need large print keyboards, and braille stickers for keyboards!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Established in 1979, our school provides educational and support services for children with hearing or vision loss in the Mobile County Public School System. Some of the students have additional challenges that magnify the impact of the vision or hearing loss. Each of the students has special needs and requires extensive technology and assistance to succeed in a school setting. Students attend classes at one of three locations: the elementary campus, the middle school campus, and the high school campus. In addition, itinerant services are provided throughout county for students whose disability is not severe enough to require full time placement on one of the campuses. Services are also provided in neighboring counties. We currently have over 50 children in our elementary campus but serve over 350 throughout the school system.
We recently purchased Mac computers for our computer lab. These computers have amazing accessibility features for our visually impaired students, except their keyboards!
These materials will ensure our visually impaired students can participate just like their seeing peers!
Teaching students with visual impairments means, as a school, we have to adapt many lessons and ways of teaching. Our students learn just the same as their seeing peers, but often need the materials to be enlarged or use Braille.
The large keyboards with various background colors will be used with our visually impaired students and their specific background needs. Many of the students need dark to light contrast, while others need the opposite. The Braille stickers will be placed on other keyboards to give our Braille readers the same possibilities as their friends.
We use the computers to teach students the importance of typing, researching, learning, and sometimes playing! Some of our students are not able to use pen & paper due to their low vision. These keyboards will give them the freedom to type while their friends are writing.
The keyboards have the expanded keyboard that includes numbers. Our current keyboards do not have this essential component for our students. Trying to work on math facts and lessons without the expanded keyboard is difficult for these students! Learning to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and other mathematical functions is critical for life skills and academics. Math is used across the curriculum and something as simple as providing these expanded keyboards will allow our students to achieve these goals!
