Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title I school in sunny Arizona. The majority of our students speak English as a second language, and 100% of our students qualify for free lunch. Many of them have experienced the difficulties and trauma that can come from living in poverty and struggle to focus on school as a result. That said, our students are some of the brightest, most creative kids you can imagine.
They are becoming quite the talented writers, but unfortunately, many of our students don't have access to computers and the internet at home.
As a result, they are not as tech savvy as they need to be to compete in the real world. They struggle with basic skills like typing, researching, collaborating and emailing on computers. This year, we were fortunate to qualify for the Verizon Innovative Learning grant. These devices have made a world of difference for our students, and allow them to continue their learning at home. With your help, we hope to purchase enough keyboards for each child in each class to help our students make the most of their new devices!
My Project
Our students often come to us several grade levels below where they need to be with little to no technology skills. This means that every research project, every essay, every assessment is an overwhelming amount of work for most of our kids. Without intervention, many of our students will never learn to type fluently and they will struggle through every job application, email, and task involving a computer. Learning how to type fluently as a middle school student means that they can focus their energies on actually learning content as they get older, instead of struggling to simply convey their thoughts. With your support, we can make a difference in the lives of hundreds of students!
