My students need piano keyboards on which to learn music and develop their musicianship, and the splitter and ear phones so that two students can work together on each.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Middle school children have lots of energy and learn best by doing. Many students try to be first in my room so they can be the one who plays my one piano before class. I want all my students to have this chance to follow their interest in piano. This project will give them and me what we need.
My students are city kids and our school is in a large urban district.
Nearly all qualify for free lunches, and many families struggle to purchase food and clothing. We provide these children with a hands-on education; the children create artifacts as part of their learning, and then display their learning at museum nights. They don't just learn about things, they make the things they are learning about, and show others how they work, and what they mean. Music, dance, and theater are an integral part of this approach, as students explore, perform and create artistic works, all the while growing in their spatial reasoning capacity.
With these materials, every student in my school will have the opportunity to follow their interest and learn to play piano. Using keyboards big enough to accommodate two students, two will work together on the same instrument using separate earphones. The keyboards come with a curriculum installed, so after I teach the main lesson, individualized instruction will be possible as students practice at their own pace. Younger students will be able to explore and create, and older students will learn to read music, perform, and compose. I will use these materials to provide a music education for all, not just the few who can come before school or pay for lessons outside of school. Providing keyboards for all kids will motivate them to learn better and achieve more while building their musicianship for music and their cognitive capacities for music and other academic and life endeavors.
Donations for this project and the eventual purchase of the materials will make a difference.
They will give my students the opportunity to pursue the avenue of music that most interests them, to be better educated in music with a hands-on approach in an environment in which all students can be totally involved at once and not have to wait for their turn on the one piano. Many of my students spend some of their happiest hours in school. Having an opportunity to learn piano lifts them up.
