Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
With the addition of iPads to all our classrooms, students are excited to get to use them. There are all sorts of educational apps and websites they can visit, but one area where iPads don't function as well as other technology is with writing, due to the lack of an actual keyboard.
Our school serves a variety of students from all needs and ability levels: from migrant students to military families, English Language Learners and students of college professors.
Our students are eager to learn (especially when it comes to technology) but many of them have not had access to technology at home until we recently got our iPads. The iPads came with a case, but lots of families are not in a financial position to purchase things like an external keyboard for their students.
My Project
My students need 35 wireless keyboards for iPads and batteries for the keyboards. Writing is an area in which many students struggle. Our iPads allow students to access many sites that can give them practice with writing and immediate feedback to the writing they produce. By having the keyboards to use in Language Arts, students will be able to write longer pieces, because they will not be struggling to type on the screen. I envision students having a "writing station" to go along with a "reading station" that they can rotate to on a daily or every other day basis. Also, since keyboarding is no longer taught as a required class, I can devote some time to having students practice keyboarding skills on their new keyboards.
Writing is key to good communication.
No matter what career my student might have in the future, being able to communicate effectively in a written format will be important for them. Having keyboarding skills is also important for many careers. By having keyboards, students will learn better writing skills and begin to develop keyboarding skills-both of which will serve them well in their futures.
