This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
These students are dedicated children from under-served population in the South Bronx, NY, who do not have many opportunities to receive a professional musical instruction that would be a pathway for academic success.
I have been teaching them for many months, and they display a strong sense of interest in the music field.
Their musical aptitudes stand out in the classroom despite the fact that we do not have many instruments (sadly, we have no keyboards). Part of the school commitment to the Arts is articulated around a strong emphasis on music education, and our desire is to offer these children the possibility to participate in a twice-yearly concert, as part of the school curriculum and their growth as human beings.
My Project
In order to help launch the music program at The American Dream School, and to fulfill its educational mission, keyboards will be used as a tool to (a) teach the foundations of music theory, and (b) will also be used for instrumental instruction.
Through the use of the keyboards, students will learn music theory concepts that are applicable to all areas of music.
This will serve as an efficient tool to conceptualize the various notions regarding such aspects as: scales, arpeggios, chords and intervals of all sorts, as well as tonalities and modes.
Students will be able to develop keyboard skills as they explore their creative capabilities (creating melodies, finger coordination, sustaining harmonies, etc.). The ability to play an instrument is a necessary component to the well-rounded academic growth of any student.
