My Students
My students come from very diverse backgrounds. We have families of all ethnicities, including African American, Hispanic, Caucasian, European, Caribbean, Asian and more too numerous to name. We are in an urban area, ten miles from the stadiums of two major sports franchises.
The majority of our students receive free or reduced meals here at school.
We have many single-parent families. Many of our parents struggle to learn English. Time and resources are scarce for many of our families.
Our school body also includes some middle class families as well. We have a mixture of apartment-dwellers and single-family home dwellers. Some rent, some own. All are receiving a great education from dedicated teachers and administrators on my campus.
My Project
My classroom has a set of ten piano keyboards for piano class. However, we only have five stands on which those keyboards can sit. I am being creative and putting them on tables or whatever surface I can find in order for students to use them. Donorschoose.org provided half of the keyboards and stands last year, for which I am very grateful. They have also provided seating. I had an additional five keyboards already in my classroom when I took the position last year. We would love to complete the set and have a true keyboard lab with five additional keyboard stands.
