Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As the music teacher at Bronx Charter School for the Arts, an innovative K-6 public elementary school in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx, I have succeeding in implementing a keyboard- and piano-based music literacy program over the past three years for my 280 students. It has been a lot of hard work, but it is starting to pay off! The students are becoming increasingly familiar with each passing year with the basics of music notation and music literacy, and we are ready to expand our program this year to accommodate a new grade (6th). In order for this to happen, however, we desperately need more keyboards for our music room, so that students will not have to share instruments, which negatively impacts their learning. Students will use these keyboard on a daily basis in music class for most of their activities from November-June, including sight reading melodic notation, and learning repertoire from the piano literature book Teaching Little Fingers To Play by John Thompson.
By having additional keyboards in the class, all music lessons as well as practice sessions will be better learning experiences for the students because they will not have to share instruments. A student playing in his or her own keyboard can, for example, much more easily learn and internalize the repeating pattern of notes that makes up the piano keyboard than a student with access to only half the instrument. Please help fund the purchase of three lightweight beginner keyboards for our enthusiastic young piano/keyboard students. Who knows, you might be helping to create the next Rubinstein or Argerich, and you will certainly be helping a student learn to read music!
