Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the wonder and excitement that came from discovering the world around you? My students crave that same experience but require more exposure to the world that exists outside of their immediate community.
My students are curious and intrigued by the world around them.
Many of the students at our school come from families who struggle financially, and we also have a high population of English learners. These families do not always have the resources to be able to provide all of the enrichment activities that they would like for their children to experience.
My Project
My students need 25 subscriptions to the classroom magazine TIME For Kids to have reading materials geared toward informing them about the world in which they live. Students will be able to read the selections as a class or in small-group or partner settings, strengthening their reading skills. They will also begin to practice reading news and other media that keeps them informed of their world. This will be a great resource for students to extend their knowledge of the topics that are being covered in class.
TIME for Kids will allow the students to read non-fiction texts about the world around them.
The concepts learned in class will be transformed from abstract ideas with which they have difficulty connecting to ideas that are brought to life through pictures and application of knowledge to real-world scenarios. This great resource will also be available to other second graders at our school, as I plan on sharing these great resources with the other second-grade teachers.
