This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This year I have a very diverse group of Kindergarten students. Some students are beginning to read and write, while others are still learning the difference between letters and numbers. Our school receives Title I funding and the majority of students receive free and reduced lunch. There is a homeless shelter for women recovering from domestic abuse in the area, so many of the children are without a permanent home.
Even though my kids come from difficult home lives, they all deserve a chance to succeed.
In order to focus, it is important that they have basic needs met. I would love for my kids to be able to think about school and reach their full potential.
My Project
Many of the Kindergarten students do not have basic supplies to keep them warm and clean. A large number of them are homeless or are living in shelters escaping abusive home lives. Simple supplies such as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste will allow the children to come to school clean and ready to learn.
There is a lot of stress not knowing where your next meal is coming from or if you will have a place to sleep tomorrow.
Having your own blanket gives you something to hold on to and keep you safe. My kids need blankets so they can get a good night's sleep and be ready to learn.
