My students need a subscription to Scholastic News Magazine. It is important for students to keep up on current events and learn what is going on in the world.
Many students in my school don't come from homes where current events come up in conversation. Some have never seen the evening news, left our state, or can name more than 2 of the U.S. Presidents. I want to make the upcoming school year one filled with excitement about what is going on in the world.
My students come from a high poverty area.
We have a diverse population of wonderful students with a tremendous amount of pride in our school. For some, it is a struggle to even get to school, but when they do they enter a safe environment with staff that care about them. It's a place full of opportunities to learn and help them create their future. We encourage our students to RISE ABOVE any situation they may be given by working hard and being a good citizen.
My Project
My students will be receiving Scholastic News Magazine. We will be using it in class by reading it, discussing the articles, researching current events that my students are interested in stemming form the magazine, and developing awareness of current issues in the world.
Each magazine issue come with a teacher's guide that contains several activities to use with the magazine. It also has Common Core aligned questions and discussion prompts.
I want my students to become productive members of society and have a love of the world they live in.
I want them to learn that there is more out there than the little community that we live in. I want them to become knowledgeable about politics, history, geography and other issues that will be portrayed in the magazines. These things will help them when it becomes time to get a job, vote or make any plans for their future.
