it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello there! I'm an AVID teacher at an under-served Middle School in Texas. Students in the AVID program would be the first in their family to go to college and show great college potential with the right support. AVID aims to work towards closing the achievement gap for these students with challenging circumstances, many of which are English language learners. In this class, we strengthen writing, reading comprehension, math, and many interpersonal/social skills to prepare for the professional world.
To take this opportunity-enhancing academic elective, students give up the option of taking art, theater, or possibly a music class--this means they can use all the motivation they can get to keep up in this rigorous class.
I want to do everything in my power to get these college-bound students to their highest potential. Sometimes, this means bribing students to come in for tutorials, keeping up with their Cornell Notes, and rewarding them for excellent organization.
My Project
My students need all the encouragement and motivation they can get to keep strengthening their skills.
Instead of opting for an additional theater, art, or music elective, these students have elected to essentially add another core class to their load to strengthen their writing, reading comprehension, math, and especially interpersonal/social/college readiness skills.
Sometimes the motivation gets low in this group. Sometimes students get tired of the rigor and think about taking a less challenging elective. We need some rewards for coming to tutorials, rewards for classroom competitions, and some snacks for the college field trips we take these students on. Sometimes a snack or a piece of candy will make all the difference in getting a student to show up for something that will greatly benefit their academic/career readiness.
