This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are some of the sweetest, hardest working children you will ever meet. Despite the many obstacles life has thrown their way, they show up excited and eager to learn each day. They're ready to give their best, and I meet them head on with challenges to help them grow and develop into exceptional students, friends and leaders!
My students need materials that meet their wide range of developmental abilities.
Our school is a Title I school. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. An entire wing of our school is dedicated to pre-k to fifth grade children with various special needs. I have the joy of teaching our Pre-k to 2nd grade students with intellectual disabilities.
My Project
I have a very structured classroom with embedded rituals and routines. My students thrive on consistency. It helps them manage their day, regardless of the effects of their disabilities, when they know what to expect and what I expect of them! Through the stubbornness associated with some syndromes, to the ADHD and lack of focus, and the intense need for sensory stimulation, my students work hard to practice and learn new skills.
I want to add another layer of structure In our classroom to help my students stay on task and know what to expect throughout the day!
The attendance pocket chart will give the students an opportunity to practice independent responsibility each morning as they get to class. The daily schedule pocket chart will give the students a much needed visual reminder of our daily activities. The chair bands will allow them to fidget without interrupting others.
The privacy boards will help my students stay focused as they work on small group and independent activities. They struggle with insecurity and always assume the student next to them has the right answer. I want them to see they can do their work, and do it correctly, on their own.
I’m also very excited about the shoe racks! I want to implement a task box system for independent skills practice. These racks will keep us organized and our work easily identified and accessible!
