This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 5th grade at a Philadelphia Middle School. My group is very diverse. At the most, there are 5 different languages spoken between my students. They are also diverse academically. Some of my students fall far below the reading grade level. As a "super" teacher, I want success for all my students. Each day I am planning different lessons and projects, for the different levels. My higher leveled students are able to participate in student-led projects.
For my students, who need more of me, I want to bring them a little closer.
Some students have fallen behind because of language barriers, some students lack motivation and even more have fallen through the educational cracks in the urban areas.
My Project
I am in the process of designing a flexible seating classroom. This is where we get rid of the desk and chairs and give students an option. So I will be purchasing a variety of comfortable seating. I am confident this will be helpful especially with students who can work independently.
The truth is, everyone doesn't learn the same and I need to keep the students that need me, close.
A kidney table will allow me to work in smaller groups and be able to reach the students I am working with. This will help to improve my lower level readers.
