Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have below average cognitive abilities.
We need to be ready to transition to life after High School. We are preparing them for community situations in a setting they feel safe and accepted. It is getting challenging to create situations for them to use the skills they learn.
My students are experiencing High School right along with typical teens.
My students range in age from 14 to 19 and varying skill levels. Some are non-verbal. As part of our work study class we run the school store, building them up to be able to participate in work programs in the community.
My Project
Our school store has limited stock. The chores the students perform are limited, we can only sweep and Windex so many times. If we had the supplies to create our OWN stock, the creativity possibilities are endless. The students would have to come up with designs on the computer, print them, cut them out and then use a heat press to attach them to the shirts. They would price and display them as well. This will create a flow of the general ed. classmates into the store and create situations for social interactions. Students will learn several skills to prepare them for a work program outside the high school and later for independence as an adult.
Our project for the heat press and printer was funded.
We have several requests for shirts and are in need of the paper to make the transfers and ink to keep this an ongoing project. We bought the shirts ourselves but need dark colored paper to complete the project.
