My Students

Novelist Henry James said: "Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind, and the third is to be kind." This quote embodies our students because their kind hearts shine through in all that they do. They are always making deposits in others emotional bank accounts by encouraging others and having a kind word for everyone that crosses their path. At any time throughout the day, you can look at our students and find them working diligently on a task. They always complete each task with the mindset that they are going to give their best and utilize all of the resources that they have to be successful. Our students are passionate about being competitive within themselves, and they are always striving to be better than before. We are so pleased with the progress that our students have made, and we know that they will continue to be trailblazers!

My Project

We are comprised of a classroom with diverse students, half of our students come from lower income households, and 40 percent are students with disabilities. Last year we purchased items for flexible seating to pilot the program to see if it would benefit our students and the experience surpassed anything we could have imagined.

When our students used flexible seating, we observed that students were more focused and on task, they were more empowered and overall more enthusiastic about learning.

This year we would love to take flexible seating even further to increase students’ choice and voice in our classroom so that they may learn to become more independent and have control over their own learning. We hope that with new purchases of flexible seating, we will be able to get students even more motivated while increasing their physical health. Through various flexible seating options, students will have numerous opportunities to move. Specifically, they can rock, bounce, stand, and even wobble while building core strength and increasing their stability.

Flexible seating encourages students to find their best learning style, allowing them to stay focused, calm, and engaged. When students are comfortable, they are calm, focused and more productive. Flexible seating such as tables with benches, balance balls and bean bag chairs also facilitates an environment where students have more opportunities to collaborate in pairs or small groups. It also encourages students to share spaces and supplies where they learn to function as a community by taking turns and sharing. We want our classroom to be one in which the students feel proud to be a part of and one that truly feels like a second home to them.
