Help me give my students the novel The Boy Who Lost His Face as well as logic puzzles and dice to use on our Zoom calls and colored paper to continue printing and mailing student certificates and awards.
I teach students who are struggling both academically and emotionally. The pandemic threw us all for a loop. My readers were suddenly alone, having to try to read texts either on their own or over Zoom. The number of kids who join my Google Classroom or a Zoom read-aloud is small but the kids who come are so game. We struggle through poor connections, screaming babies and barking dogs to read a scene in a play or a book chapter.
My Project
My students are really enjoying reading a chapter or two a week of Louis Sachar's novel, The Boy Who Lost His Face. It's strange enough to keep these struggling readers page-turning. I have posted up to Chapter 4 online for them to read, but what I'd like to do is mail the 8 kids who are reading this their very own copy of the book to finish at home. This, I believe, will make their day!
I also am asking for brain twisters and puzzles that I can post on Google Classroom and do on our Zoom video calls.
These kids love logic and puzzles and I think that will be a fun way to keep connecting during this last quarter of distance learning. Finally, I am asking for 12-sided dice so that I can assign number activities.
