Anyone that has taken a foreign language course remembers when the teacher told you that you would be needing a dictionary for the class. New and exciting apps have replaced the common dictionary but our classroom is lacking access to these resources. We need tablets.
My students are a good representation of the entire school.
They are comprised of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from a diversity of backgrounds. There is a fairly even balance of the "haves" and the "have nots" in our school but we we have a strong sense of community amongst our kids. Kids take Spanish as an elective during their time here and their experience and exposure are likewise diverse.
My Project
Students will use tablets to be able to access flashcard sets by using the Quizlet app. Students will record and submit oral presentations through the Google Voice and Google Drive apps. Students will use the Flannel Board app to make narrative presentations in Spanish to record and later present to the class. Students will be able to access classroom materials through the class blog. Students will work collaboratively using the tablets during small group learning centers.
With average class sizes of over 40 kids and the world language programs being incessantly whittled away in seat time and offerings, our kids need new and creative ways to engage into the foreign language classroom.
Without new technologies we are forced to continue using traditional methods that are irrelevant to our kids. True language development only occurs when true communication is taking place and what better way to engage kids than their preferred method of social interaction.
