This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students arrive to school everyday although they are not dressed warmly enough for the weather. Having warm clothing will make them feel so much better seeing that they have limited funds and resources available. Our school is in the urban area and students are below the national poverty level, 96% receive some source of state assistance which does not include clothing allowances. These students are in dire need of warm clothing to make it through the harsh winter season we are experiencing here in Michigan.
My Project
The students are in need of fleece joggers to keep them warm this winter and which will allow them to be ready to start their day as well as ready to learn. I teach in a center-based special education school where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. The need for my students to be warm this winter can be a matter of life and death due to some of their physical disabilities. Their parents are doing their best with limited income and providing my students with warmth will take some of the burden off of the families.
