Our school is a therapeutic day school for special needs students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Students typically attend our school due to challenging behaviors in general education buildings. These behaviors are often physically or verbally aggressive, either towards staff members and/or students and themselves.
Most students that come to our school have typically experienced traumatic events in their lives and/or suffer from mental health disabilities.
The goal of our classroom is to determine effective interventions, so that students can transition back to their general education settings.
My Project
This school year due to budget cuts, our district decided to add 40 minutes to our already long school day. This means our students are in school from 6:50 until 2:40. The students at our school all receive transportation to and from school because of their unique needs. With our extended school day, students are going several hours without food once breakfast is served! Students in our classroom qualify for free and reduced lunches. Some of them are even provided food on the weekends or when not at school due to financial difficulties. Because of this, most of our parents are unable to send snacks to school.
Our students need snacks to ensure that their basic needs are met so that they can focus on learning in our classroom.
I would like to provide my students with a morning snack, so their bellies can remain full. Our classroom is also in need of disinfecting wipes, spray, and facial tissues to keep germs out of our classroom, so the students can remain at school and learning!
