Keeping Students Healthy By Cleaning The Air They Breathe
My students need an air purifier to improve air quality and reduce allergens in our science lab to improve their health and learning experience.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are gifted with excellent scientific curiosity but challenged by the limits of our school's infrastructure. They want to engage in authentic scientific tasks and would benefit from improved air quality in a lab without adequate ventilation.
My students attend a public middle school in a high poverty neighborhood in Upper Manhattan.
They are challenged with issues of poverty and neglect, yet maintain a scholarly presence that is evident by their manners, commitment to community, and love of learning.
Many of my students are struggling to learn English, as they are new to the country, yet excel at science because it engages their curiosity and rewards intellectual rigor. Our science curriculum supports our students through rich, authentic scientific experiments. My students ask questions, design experiments, and are given support to follow through and find answers. As a school, we are constantly improving our instruction and modernizing our equipment and are duly impressed by our students' academic improvement and moral character.
My Project
Real science is sometimes stinky - and smells can be very dramatic in a middle school classroom. Though teaching in a laboratory provides kids with an authentic setting for learning science, the ventilation is poor and mildew has developed in the air ducts. Whether my students are studying preserved bugs or building a volcano, any smell in the lab stays in the lab all day and can result in situations not favorable for learning. To help eliminate this barrier in my classroom, I am requesting funding for an air purifier to circulate and sanitize the air.
An air purifier with a carbon filter and HEPA capability will greatly improve the learning environment in my lab by eliminating those odors and helping to keep my kids focused on learning more science. I hope the air purifier will improve attendance by helping to limit the transmission to cold germs and improve the symptoms of kids with allergies. It will absorb volatile chemical smells and keep my students healthy and happy.
In striving for the best learning environment for our students, the science department at my school believes we can improve instruction for our kids by cleaning the air.
This is imperative in any professional lab and so it also models best practices early in my students' first steps in inquiry driven, laboratory rich science. Your support will reach all of our 8th graders - approximately 150 students per day in the lab. Materials funded will be sustained to protect students indefinitely.
