My students need 4 engaging center-based materials that help reinforce math, reading, and writing skills as well as foster social skills and independence.
Would you like to sit in the same place all day completing worksheets? What if that worksheet was too easy or too hard? How would you feel? My second graders certainly don't want to sit in their seats all day. They need to be engaged with materials appropriate for their learning level and style.
I teach in an urban district in Massachusetts.
About 93% of our talented and hard working students receive free or reduced lunch. It’s a very small school of just 210 students, and it lacks many of the amenities that are now standard in non-urban schools such as classroom computers, whiteboards and a gym.
Funding for supplies is limited; teachers buy most of their materials. My second grade students represent diverse backgrounds culturally, linguistically, and racially. They face many challenges when outside of school, due to the effects of poverty. Yet, they come to school eager and excited to learn each day. However, many are below grade level in math and reading.
I wish to make their experience at school one that is challenging in a positive way. To do this, I need resources to meet my students’ unique needs. I would like to provide the materials needed to foster growth both academically and socially, so that they will be successful in school and out.
My Project
I would like to provide the Math Activities Stations and the Reading and Writing Activities Stations, along with two exciting games that focus on time and main idea, to help meet the diverse range of learners in my classroom, such as English language learners and students with ADHD.
With such diverse needs, it’s critical for me to meet with small groups of students, who need extra reinforcement in reading and math. The stations allow me to accomplish this by providing structured and meaningful activities, which enable students to practice concepts independent of the teacher.
Stations allow me to provide a wide range of activities for all skills levels, learning styles and interests, in a much more interactive format than traditional worksheets. In turn, students also learn self-monitoring, collaboration and problem solving. Most importantly for the students, the stations keep them engaged, moving and empowered to make choices.
Your generous donation will make math and language arts even more exciting for my students, and it will help with classroom management.
Funding the skill building activity stations will allow students to have fun mastering place value, operations, fractions, and essential language skills at their own pace. These stations will grant many classes of second grade students access to high quality material, benefiting them socially and academically.
