Mr. Praskin from Brooklyn NY is requesting classroom basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a refrigerator and microwave to warm up their snacks, and cool down their drinks.

My students come from impoverished communities where resources are scarce. They have special needs and do not graduate from this high school to go on to college; rather, they have to find jobs and begin to support themselves while helping out their families. My school is lucky enough to have a kitchen work site, where students learn job skills as part of their regular school day in order to prepare them for the workforce. At our in school worksite, Lillian's Bistro, my student's learn different skills, such as chopping vegetables, searing meat, washing dishes, taking orders, making change in a cash register, and even taking inventory and shopping at Costco for food. As part of their regular daily tasks,my students often use words associated with the native language and needs a setting to transition to regular use of the English language.
My students need a refrigerator and microwave to create a setting within the ESL office where they can have regular conversations while sharing a snack to facilitate the acquisition of the english language.
Together, with your support we can make this setting a reality for my students and bridge the gap between their native language and English.
Xiǎochī. Bocadillo. Lanche. Zakuska. Having snacks (which is what these words say) is an environment that allows an instructor and student to have open discussions to embed the acquisition of the English language. Having this microwave and refrigerator in my classroom will allow instruction to be given in the learning of English. Many of the terms that will be used to warm-up, chill, or prepare snacks to be eaten will drastically improve the English language spoken by many of my English language learners. Within this environment, my students will feel safe to make mistakes, which will promote learning. While having candid conversations over snacks or drinks, my students will learn to transition from using their native language to the language they need to enter the workforce!
