Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located on the water's edge. It is a small Title I high school located in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn. We are sandwiched between two major urban bridges - The Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.

All of my students are English Language Learners (ELL).

They come from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential. As a discipline, science is ever-changing, and offers hands-on learning opportunities that work well with my ELLs. Having access to biotechnology can offer a means to better understand the latest discoveries in this field of research. I would like my students to have access to biotechnology while they are still in high school. If I can generate interest in this field, it might inspire my students to seek out such educational opportunities on their own.

My Project

We have been studying the field of genetics and the applications of biotechnology to better understand human traits, genetically modified crops and protein analysis. Often, we must maintain our specimens at specific temperatures to ensure proper enzymatic reactions. If we had a set of appropriately sized freezer gel racks for micro tubes and PCR tubes, we could greatly improve and speed-up the process. Using a freezer gel rack also prevents the degradation of PCR primers and restriction enzymes while minimizing the chance of contamination that often results when using a conventional ice bath. Unfortunately, the racks that are needed for such projects are expensive. Considering our present financial state, which includes continued budget cuts for education, obtaining this equipment is unlikely if not for the support of caring individuals like you.

My job is to do everything in my power to help my students graduate high school and advance to college.

As a science teacher, my goal is to unleash my students' natural curiosity about the world around us. I cannot show my students the latest advances in the field of biotechnology without your help.
