Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title One school, but that does not stop them or myself from reaching our goals. My students achieve academic success repeatedly throughout the year. They are hard and determined workers and I am so blessed to have wonderful students. Everyday they come to school ready to learn and I could not ask for more from them.
Even though they are hard workers, my students still face daily struggles.
They come to school to be safe and to forget about the struggles they face at home. We create a family within the classroom where everyone is welcome.
My Project
Unfortunately there has been some really terrible things that have happened in schools. Atkinson Elementary has taken action and has trained all of its staff with ALICE. ALICE training helps teachers and students take charge in an awful situation and keep each other safe.
All the items requested are the basic materials needed to keep classrooms safe from an active intruder.
These items are easy for students to use and they are very effective. The tow rope, extension cord and key chains are used to help keep the door locked and closed. The strobe light and the flashlights are used to disorient an intruder. The magnets allow for the classroom doors to be locked at all times. If we need to lock our door, we pull the magnet off and shut the door. This will save us a lot of time and we will not have to try and lock the doors in a hurry. The baskets are used to store material and will provide easy access for when they are needed.
Students and teachers can no longer lock the door and sit. With the proper training and materials, we can take charge and keep ourselves safe from harm.
