Hidden Valley is an elementary school in Northern California tucked away in a suburban neighborhood. We are one of 30 elementary schools in the Mount Diablo Unified School District whose student body is just under 850 students strong. We have 33 dedicated general education teachers and 4 special education teachers. One hundred twenty six of our students are English language learners. In addition, 30 percent of our students are on free and reduced lunch.
According to the Healthy Kids Survey 2017-2018, 89% of our parents who completed the survey feel that our school is a safe place for students and 85% of our fifth graders who completed the survey feel safe most of the time.
My Project
Before students can learn, they need to feel safe both in and out of the classroom. By supplying teachers with two way walkie talkies, we can communicate with each other across our campus when facing a dangerous situation. We can communicate with our administrators directly who can contact authorities.
Teachers need to be visible when we are out supervising on the playground or helping with traffic, and we need bright safety vests to allow us to be seen.
There are times when teachers on the yard blend in with students and aren’t easy to find. When a student needs an affirmation, they need to know who to go to.
