This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from one of the poorest regions in the United States. Approximately 98% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and many travel over 30 miles each day by bus.
We are fighting the battle of poverty that has plagued the Arkansas Delta for generations.
Our teachers worry because these students are often absent from school, missing important instruction time, and sometimes fall behind.
If we could provide kits to families, to treat and prevent head lice, we could help keep some of these students in school.
My Project
Keeping kids in class where they can participate in activities and receive valuable instruction is at the top of every teacher's wish list. We know that students who are chronically absent from school do not have high success rates.
We need to help families keep their students in school.
Our families want their kids to be in school, but often cannot break the cycle of head lice once it enters the home. Treatment is expensive, especially for families with multiple children who experience homelessness. If we can provide treatments that will assist families and teachers, so students can stay in school, we feel that our academic success will rise.
